One Thing

by on February 22, 2011

When you’re down and unmotivated, it can be very hard.

Every task seems arduous

Every hill, a mountain.

So you curl up in the shadows and die of overwhelm.

I’ve been there. It’s not fun.
Here’s what you’re going to do, beloved.

Make just one promise to yourself each night.

Something that you WILL complete the next day.

No matter what.
Write it down on a small piece of paper ~ post-it note is ideal.

Simple words.

One sentence.

One thing.
Carry your note with you until that one thing is completed.

Keep in in your pocket.

On your monitor.

On your dashboard.

Keep reminding yourself.

One thing.

No matter what.
Don’t let the mountain of undone things unnerve you.

Each small success is progress, each tiny completion builds momentum.

One thing.

No matter what.
Could be the same thing each day for a week.

Could be a small step toward a bigger goal.

Could be something different each time.

Could be the same thing done differently.

It doesn’t matter.

One thing.

No matter what.
Could be so small that your inner voice says “Why bother?”

“It won’t make a difference.”

Don’t listen, dear heart.

One thing.

No matter what.
And when it’s done, throw the note in the bin.

And smile.

One thing.

No matter what.
And one day, perhaps, you’ll think …

Maybe there’s time for another one thing?

I believe in you, sweetness.

You can do this.

Whatever it is.

With love and bliss-ings,

I love this post. I especially love this for those days when I feel like I am spinning my wheels. It really helps to focus on one thing you want to accomplish. Once you get that one thing done, you feel so good you want to do another thing. 😉

Very well said Jacqui 🙂
focusing on one step at a time instead of the whole picture can definitely keep you from feelings of overwhelm. Our journeys consist of one step, one thing at a time that takes us to where we wish to be.

Wonderful thought for today!

Very Inspiring, Jacqui! It is so true. It’s amazing what lots of “one things” can add up to.

Thank you for the inspiration today.

Hello Goddess friend of mine – wonderful post to remind us all that we can only do one thing at a time in life – to think about doing more than one is the time when we get overwhelmed – live in the moment for the moment only carries one thing….
In light and love,

Jacqueline Gates February 22, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Goddess Nancy, I love how you close with “in Light and Love” ~ it’s so very YOU!
Overwhelm is a sign of the times, I think.
We all have so much to do, and so many demands on our time that it’s challenging to just focus on the present,
and let the light and love flow.

Lidia February 22, 2011 at 6:38 pm

One thing….DONE….No matter what!!!!
I love this note Jacqui! I thing it goes back to LOVE yourself!!! Forgive yourself for past mistakes and just move on! Do one thing, then two then three a day.
For me it helps when I groups things into 3s??? For some reason it makes it look manageable 🙂

I couldn’t have said that better myself Jacqueline. Everybody has reached that point where they lose confidence and motivation.

I like the concept of your One thing strategy because the one thing you write down will help give you a goal to accomplish, which could help improve your motivational and confidence level.

Great advice, I will keep this in mind so the next time I get down I know how to pick myself back up. Thanks for sharing insights.

Hello Goddess!

What a wonderful way with words and such fabulous advice.

On a day that I’m feeling down or unmotivated doing one little baby step towards something bigger lifts my spirits tremendously and I usually end up getting a massive amount done once I get started. However, if I choose to wallow, do nothing, I just become more down and even less motivated.

Luckily I’m full of beans this morning!

Hope you’re having a wonderful week.

Kind regards,

Emma 🙂

Aloha Goddess Jacqui,

That was an incredibly powerful and “easy to read” post! What a great idea!

Your concept is perfect as we all try to do too many things and we neglect the one thing that could be the “turning point” in our life! Over the years, I’ve learned what Brian Tracy calls “Eat That Frog”… doing that one thing that is the one we’ve been avoiding yet we know it will be very significant. Doing that thing or things (20%) everyday, is what makes all the difference in the world!

Thank you for this very innovative post with a Huge message!

Much love,
Kellie 🙂

Hello there my friend;

Thanks so much for sharing this one thing that can be the difference between success and failure for someone out there. This a great post Jacqueline, with a simple yet powerful tip that I hope people take action on. Just complete one thing each day no matter what.

Thanks again for sharing. Make today your best day ever my friend.

Allegra Sinclair February 24, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Jacqui –
This is CRAZY in its simplicity and power! And the writing is so beautiful, it’s easy to see myself in the words. The power and the shift in self-esteem that will come from completing that one thing is huge. And the absolutely focus on just the one thing, carried with me, until complete… Wow! My favorite part is how you demonstrate how we should speak to ourselves with gentle words, persistent encouragement and love. Continue your POWERFUL week! Allegra

I SO NEEDED TO HEAR THIS TODAY!!! I have had some mountainous obstacles come into my life this last 2 weeks. It seems when I get tired & rundown(lately I have been quite sick as well…I am feeling better today:-)) …I can become discouraged & depressed & as you say ‘want to curl up & die’. It is a comfort to hear your words of encouragement ‘To Do the ONE Thing’….as well as to know other folks like you at times suffer from what I call ‘the mud of life as well’.

Thanks Again:-)

Holly February 25, 2011 at 5:45 pm

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh ! Goddess! You are so right! How often we overwhelm ourselves with what I should do and what I should have done…. if I just take the time and do one thing that will get me much further than oh I should have, could have, would have. Thank you for the great reminder of taking one, step at a time!

Hi Jacqueline,

Very short, too the point and simple. Yet, very powerful. I myself haven’t really thought about this in the perspective you’ve laid out here. I like it, really puts the whole realm of overwhemling into a new relief.

Hi Jacqui ~ Timing is everything…I so needed to see your post today as for the last few days, I’ve been in that state-of-mind that you mention…knowing I have a lot to do, yet not being able to make myself do anything…lol! I’m so glad that you mention the one task for the next day as this is something I’ve utilized for many years and helps me get through some tough times. It can even help me find some momentum and accomplish a few more tasks each day when I thought that perhaps I could not. Really appreciate you sharing 🙂 Christine

Thanks for the inspiring message. Yes, sometimes I just don’t have the motivation to do anything. In which case, I just let myself be. I give myself a break. Then I always spring back, livelier than ever. Keeping a list of what I need to accomplish really helps me not only to organize my tasks but also motivates me to start again from where I left off during my “break” 🙂

jacqui! i’m reading “eat that frog” by brian tracy so your post made a huge light bulb go off for me today. i like your “one thing” philosophy. it always is such a wonderful feeling knowing that you accomplished something during the day, rather than go to bed at night feeling like you wasted the day.

(and cute note pad, too!)

Thank you for the great reminder! This really is what it is all about. Always focusing on what is the next step, then the next… but only one at a time. Really we can’t do more than one thing at a time efficiently anyway so why worry about the mountain of things we think we have to do!

Great reminder. I look forward to your next blog post!

Jacqui, this is fabulous!! (I would only expect that from a Goddess!) One thing a day!

That is truly beautiful. Such an inspiring writer! And, -you are so right. If we just take one thing we CAN get one thing done. One thing I’ve done is to become a fan of this blog. You are awesome!

Jacqueline Gates March 2, 2011 at 10:01 am

Thank you, goddess Martha.
Getting one thing DONE almost always leads to getting another thing done.
And before you know it, you’ve had a productive day.
Love that you came to visit 🙂

Tammy Matthews March 21, 2011 at 1:31 pm

I feel overwhelm almost daily. Just recently I’ve started a notebook and in it I write down what I AM going to get done No Matter what each day! And most every day I get them done. There are days when I don’t, but I don’t let it get me down. I just know that I’m taking action and I’m constantly moving forward and I’m planting the seeds and nurturing them – waiting for the season when they begin to sprout.

No Matter What will get me where I want to be!

Thanks for another great post.

Aww, sweet Tammy, **hugs**
You have no need to feel overwhelmed, dear heart.
Look at what you wrote … “most every day I get them done”, and “I’m constantly moving forward.”
You’re on your way, scrumptious one, and there’s a whole lot of us watching in admiration.
Won’t be long before those seeds start blooming 🙂

Hi Goddess,

Thanks for the reminder to write ONE THING down. Getting things from my head to a piece of paper is challenging, to say the least. Something to work on for sure.

Keep the Smiles,

You are right. But sometimes we want to delve ourselves into many areas, as alternative sources of income. What should be done in that case? For example, people on a regular job may be involved in other part time works as well that may be altogether different from the prior.
