One Thing

When you’re down and unmotivated, it can be very hard.

Every task seems arduous

Every hill, a mountain.

So you curl up in the shadows and die of overwhelm.

I’ve been there. It’s not fun.
Here’s what you’re going to do, beloved.

Make just one promise to yourself each night.

Something that you WILL complete the next day.

No matter what.
Write it down on a small piece of paper ~ post-it note is ideal.

Simple words.

One sentence.

One thing.
Carry your note with you until that one thing is completed.

Keep in in your pocket.

On your monitor.

On your dashboard.

Keep reminding yourself.

One thing.

Done.

No matter what.
Don’t let the mountain of undone things unnerve you.

Each small success is progress, each tiny completion builds momentum.

One thing.

Done.

No matter what.
Could be the same thing each day for a week.

Could be a small step toward a bigger goal.

Could be something different each time.

Could be the same thing done differently.

It doesn’t matter.

One thing.

Done.

No matter what.
Could be so small that your inner voice says “Why bother?”

“It won’t make a difference.”

Don’t listen, dear heart.

One thing.

Done.

No matter what.
And when it’s done, throw the note in the bin.

And smile.

One thing.

Done.

And one day, perhaps, you’ll think …

Maybe there’s time for another one thing?

Overwhelm is a sign of the times, I think.
We all have so much to do, and so many demands on our time that it’s challenging to just focus on the present,
and let the light and love flow.

One thing….DONE….No matter what!!!!
I love this note Jacqui! I thing it goes back to LOVE yourself!!! Forgive yourself for past mistakes and just move on! Do one thing, then two then three a day.
For me it helps when I groups things into 3s??? For some reason it makes it look manageable 🙂

I couldn’t have said that better myself Jacqueline. Everybody has reached that point where they lose confidence and motivation.

I like the concept of your One thing strategy because the one thing you write down will help give you a goal to accomplish, which could help improve your motivational and confidence level.

Great advice, I will keep this in mind so the next time I get down I know how to pick myself back up. Thanks for sharing insights.

What a wonderful way with words and such fabulous advice.

On a day that I’m feeling down or unmotivated doing one little baby step towards something bigger lifts my spirits tremendously and I usually end up getting a massive amount done once I get started. However, if I choose to wallow, do nothing, I just become more down and even less motivated.

Wonderful.

Luckily I’m full of beans this morning!

You are speaking to me! After the last two months and now trying to get back to work…well thanks! I will not stress or die or the “overwhelm”! I am still motivated its just hard to not get overwhelmed with all that I need to get done!

That was an incredibly powerful and “easy to read” post! What a great idea!

Your concept is perfect as we all try to do too many things and we neglect the one thing that could be the “turning point” in our life! Over the years, I’ve learned what Brian Tracy calls “Eat That Frog”… doing that one thing that is the one we’ve been avoiding yet we know it will be very significant. Doing that thing or things (20%) everyday, is what makes all the difference in the world!

I SO NEEDED TO HEAR THIS TODAY!!! I have had some mountainous obstacles come into my life this last 2 weeks. It seems when I get tired & rundown(lately I have been quite sick as well…I am feeling better today:-)) …I can become discouraged & depressed & as you say ‘want to curl up & die’. It is a comfort to hear your words of encouragement ‘To Do the ONE Thing’….as well as to know other folks like you at times suffer from what I call ‘the mud of life as well’.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh ! Goddess! You are so right! How often we overwhelm ourselves with what I should do and what I should have done…. if I just take the time and do one thing that will get me much further than oh I should have, could have, would have. Hi Jacqui ~ Timing is everything…I so needed to see your post today as for the last few days, I’ve been in that state-of-mind that you mention…knowing I have a lot to do, yet not being able to make myself do anything…lol! I’m so glad that you mention the one task for the next day as this is something I’ve utilized for many years and helps me get through some tough times. Thanks for the inspiring message. Yes, sometimes I just don’t have the motivation to do anything. In which case, I just let myself be. I give myself a break. Then I always spring back, livelier than ever. Keeping a list of what I need to accomplish really helps me not only to organize my tasks but also motivates me to start again from where I left off during my “break” 🙂

jacqui! i’m reading “eat that frog” by brian tracy so your post made a huge light bulb go off for me today. i like your “one thing” philosophy. it always is such a wonderful feeling knowing that you accomplished something during the day, rather than go to bed at night feeling like you wasted the day.

Thank you for the great reminder! This really is what it is all about. Always focusing on what is the next step, then the next… but only one at a time. Really we can’t do more than one thing at a time efficiently anyway so why worry about the mountain of things we think we have to do!

My personal mission this week is to make my To Do lists more manageable and realistic, so that I feel like a success at the end of the day…versus being only half accomplished. Thank you for the reminder!!

Jacqueline,

I feel overwhelm almost daily. Just recently I’ve started a notebook and in it I write down what I AM going to get done No Matter what each day! And most every day I get them done. There are days when I don’t, but I don’t let it get me down. I just know that I’m taking action and I’m constantly moving forward and I’m planting the seeds and nurturing them – waiting for the season when they begin to sprout.

No Matter What will get me where I want to be!

You are right. But sometimes we want to delve ourselves into many areas, as alternative sources of income. What should be done in that case? For example, people on a regular job may be involved in other part time works as well that may be altogether different from the prior.
