Product vs Plan ~ a Goddess’ guide on how to choose a Network Marketing company

by on May 29, 2010

As many of my Gentle Readers already know, this goddess is currently without an MLM company for the first time in … uh … about 23 years!

(and for the unaware, here’s the jaw-dropping, comment-inspiring, I-can’t-believe-she-did-that video that began this whole saga! )

You can go watch it ~ I’ll wait.  Ok, on with the story …

As you can see, the reason for my sabbatical was twofold. Firstly, I had been so woefully unsuccessful at all six previous attempts, and secondly I was so sick and tired of seeing other goddesses emerging (aka ‘making money’) when I was stuck at Starbucks paying off my autoship.

So I decided to STOP.

Stop saying I can’t recruit.

Stop saying I can’t sell.

And … just … Breathe!

It was time to stop blaming plans, products, the economy, and everything else, because the only thing that really needed “fixing” was Me and my mindset.

With my new-found awareness and willingness to be taught (which up to this point was sadly lacking), I found mentors like Sandy Grason, Jodie Thompson and John Milton Fogg. I improved my online skills with Kimberly Castleberry and my vision with Richard Bliss Brooke.

(Note to the Newbie Network Marketer reading this ~ if you’re currently with an mlm but it’s just not working for you, please realize that it may not be the plan, the product or your upline’s fault. The problem, more often than not, is between your ears.)

But I never gave up on Network marketing itself. After all, why would you, when financial giants like Robert Kyosaki, Donald Trump have espoused this industry as the key to financial independence? Warren Buffet actually bought himself a network marketing company, for goodness sake! This goddess may be many things, but she ain’t no fool!

So the goddess has been surreptitiously scouting the marketplace, looking at who’s doing what and which new mlm is poised to take the world by storm.

But how to choose?

Just google ‘how to choose an mlm’ and you get about 1,680,000 hits ~ that’s a lot of opinions! And each one is refutable.

For example, the general advice is to find a financially stable company with at least a five year history, but my one-time sponsor, the great Jackie Ulmer, has found tremendous success with a company that was younger than that when she joined.

They tell you that you must ‘love the product’. I’ve loved every product I’ve distributed – duh! That was why I became a distributor! – but it didn’t help with the sales.

They tell you to scrutinize the compensation plan. Well, that’s all well and good if you actually Succeed at the biz in the first place, and while I agree that due diligence is mandatory, most companies reserve the right to change a comp plan whenever they choose.

So here’s what this goddess has concluded:-

  • Go through the Compensation Plan with a fine-tooth comb. If you don’t know what red flags to look for, the good folk at Mentoring For Free can help you.  Fellow goddesses Kimberly Castleberry, Tracey Keefer and Sabrina Coffin are all expert at dissecting a plan and telling you whether it’s worth building a business under. But do realize that
  • Believe in the products.  USE them so that you can be an authentic ambassador for their benefits, and retailing will provide you with a steady income to fund your marketing channels. But don’t think your enthusiasm alone will be enough to propel you forward.

But this goddess’s ultimate advice is this:-

There is no Magic Pill. At the end of the day, your success comes down to YOU – your skills, determination, and above all, your Mindset.

Invest in yourself before you invest in anything else.

  • Read “Think and Grow Rich” – there isn’t a successful networker out there who hasn’t read it more than once.
  • Find a mentor and community that celebrates your delicious unique-ness and gives you the tools and techniques to become your best self.
  • Improve those blogging and online marketing skills, you’ll need them. This goddess followed the Profit Being You program – the title says it all and yes, if you join us, I’ll make a few dollars. But I’ll also hold your hand throughout your journey and shower you with goddess guidance, so we both score!

And the final word on this comes from the great George Washington Carver ~

“Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself!

And, Gentle Reader, as always, this goddess would be utterly thrilled to hear your thoughts on this, and would be deliriously happy if you would share it with your friends.

And of course, do put your name in the box below so you don’t run the horrendous risk of missing some gem of goddess-ly wisdom while you’re off empire building or making tea.

It sounds like you are asking for spam. Did you seriously post that you were looking for a company? I would think that you would be hit with every MLM business opp out there. I am curious to see what comes your way. You are a brave one. You know where to find me. I am going to keep checking in to see how may hits you get on this. BTW how is the head stuff coming? When you get all that figured out let me know. I would like the answer to life the universe and everything as well.

Jacqueline Gates May 29, 2010 at 10:18 pm

(Sigh) This goddess has to admit that she really didn’t think this whole thing through properly. All I wanted And yes, I have opened the door to every spammer out there ~ but fortunately, I have this handy dandy Delete button!

But the ‘head stuff’ is going well. I can’t believe how much progress I’ve made since January, the awareness I’ve gained and not to mention having finally bid farewell to my Inner Bag Lady!

We should chat. Let’s do tea!

My path has led me to more and more focus on what resonates with me deeply rather than just making money, which I chased for many years in a physical way. My personal mission is to help raise the consciousness of the world, so I have chosen a new company that fits in with this.

I ended up going with the company I’m with because:
+ Their mission lines up with my purpose – improving the world.
+ The company mission aligns with a major growing world trend – social responsibility.
+ I followed some very successful marketers who know the industry well.
+ The pay plan is very simple. … See More
+ The company has developed a simple marketing funnel system.
+ I know people involved to be very supportive and helpful, people who care about people.

The one risk factor by traditional wisdom is that it is a brand new company. However it is being put together by people who have experinece building businesses.

So I have followed my heart, I like the idea of making a difference in the world to help humanity and the envirinment while I am making money to enhance my life, and helping others do the same – it aligns with my other activities as well.

We are one, John 🙂

Jacqueline Gates May 29, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Aah Sir John, your answer is in perfect alignment with what I hoped to generate with this post.
Following your heart is definitely the quickest path to contentment, and if you can make money along the way, all the better!

Linda Secretan May 29, 2010 at 9:26 pm

Nicole may have a point. It certainly occurred to me. Then I ruminated, too.

I don’t know the Goddess, but having read a few posts and seen her intriguing and self-assured video, I do know that she is wise enough to find any of us on her own — and will probably be in touch with many to learn more about what they have to offer.

It’s a creative project whose outcome is assured on many levels, starting with my own, possibly typical, response: I’ve joined the site and subscribed to the blog and will return to see what happens. Many here will remember Nightingale’s formula – “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal.” Many will conclude that the Goddess has scored a solid success here!

Jacqueline Gates May 29, 2010 at 9:35 pm

Aaah Goddess Linda, you are wise indeed. And while it was not my intention to be bombarded with mlm opportunities (should have thought it through a little further, but ah well), it is interesting to watch people step up and affirm what it is that they are investing so much of their life into and why they believe it’s worth my doing the same.

This goddess is delighted to meet you ~ I see many fascinating chats in our future.
Love these virtual tea parties!

Rich Lomasney May 29, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Well Goddess, XanGo is the MLM I went with. At first it was for the product, as it got my atttention. I suffered a stroke in 2006, effecting my speech, memory & my entire right side. Some friends heard about my difficulty and send my a few cases, saying it might help. Within a week my body used that mangosteen to ease about 80% of my neuropathic pain. I’ve been using XanGo for 2 years now and my body’s used it to straighten out my speech, begin restoring my memory and get my off a cane. Then I fell in love with the company. I’d been in a few MLM companies before XanGo and never have I met such generous & passionate founders, so open and available to every distributor. The compensation plan is the most generous I have ever experienced. Give XanGo a look. You won’t be disappointed. Blessings, Rich

Jacqueline Gates May 29, 2010 at 10:24 pm

Wow, sir Rich, that’s quite the testimony. With that kind of passion for a product, you can’t help but share it and that will draw others to you and your business.
Thank you for sharing your story.

You are always a source of powerful wisdom, Queen Jo, and ‘selling people back to themselves’ is the greatest truth of all.

Scott Manesis May 30, 2010 at 11:17 am

Hey Jacqui,

For most leaders in the Industry the MLM itself is only one part of an entire marketing funnel. The top earners in this industry are not making their biggest paychecks from the MLM that they are in. They are only using MLM as a platform to sell tools and training.

Back during the godlrush when people headed out to California to seek wealth in the form of gold nuggets, there were few who actually struck it rich looking for the gold. There were however many who were sure to get rich, those folks were the smart cookies who sold the prospectors picks and axes. You see, they earned whether the prospects found any gold or not.

I believe this is the key to becoming wealthy by using MLM not being used by an MLM. As you mentioned payplans can change, companies can shut down etc. You think Mike Dillards feelings would be hurt if they shut down his MLM? I don’t think it would phase him a bit. What MLM is Frank Kern in? It doesn’t matter is y point. It is merely a platform to sell picks and axes.

Jacqueline Gates May 30, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Sir Scott, you are So right! And this very point is going to be part of my next post because it’s become a natural progression of thought as I explore more and more MLMs.

It’s becoming more apparent to me that if a network marketing company – ANY network marketing company – is your Sole source of income, you are just at much at risk as if you were a regular employee.

belinda cunningham May 31, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Goddess Jacqueline
You have touched the magic, it is all about the mindset not the MLM or the product. We both know that with the recommendation era it is the person not the company or the product that attracts people. So we need to have our heads in the right place. Now you have relaised that, I believe if you are truly meant to be in an MLM when the right one comes your way there will be no decision to be made, you just won’t be able to NOT join.
Nothing wrong with not being in an MLM anyway.

I love the comment “nothing wrong with not being in an MLM anyway” ~ made me smile since that’s pretty much the direction I’m heading in at the moment. Unless something exception turns up …

Cherrie Bautista@Tech Talk June 1, 2010 at 11:38 pm

I don’t talk the MLM lingo but have had similar past experiences in the past as well. Got overwhelmed with too much information and with paying for just about everything. I finally got fed up chasing the idea of the need to make a profit so just went after my passion of writing. Now, I get to earn a little from here and there, but I’m not in a hurry anymore. I’ll just follow what I feel is right and enjoy what I do.

Bill Hartman June 2, 2010 at 7:51 am

I love the post. You are so right. To many people chase MLM companies for the wrong reason. You must have the right mindset to succeed in any business. I chose a company for the product and actually use it to enhance my brick n mortar business.

Thank you for the great post!

MLM,Network Marketing is an awesome business,Its not for sissies. It is HARD work and persistent.I tell people not to join if they think it will be easy. You have to work hard and be passionate about the product and company. You should pick your partner not just sign up with anybody.
I hope you don’t give up if you really want time freedom and financial freedom. It can happen with your own MLM business. Believe!!
Beverly Monical´s last blog post ..How Would You Answer This Question?

Jacqueline Gates June 16, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Beverly, you’re SO right! I wish someone had stressed that to me before I jumped into the MLM pond! Well, I suppose they might have, but all I heard were the ‘easy riches’ and ‘work from home’.
It’s good to know that there are sponsors out there like you, who are Real, and Honest and don’t sell the Hype. Your team is lucky to have you.

Dan Myers September 3, 2010 at 1:03 am
